Humility

Somewhere along the way, about four months ago - the woman I dance for convinced me that it would still be a good idea to dance in our spring show (this weekend) before taking a maternity hiatus. Being the sucker that I am, I agreed.

So the weekend is upon us, and I'm ready to perform in all of my pregnant glory...and then I'm most of all ready to be done for a while, lying around on the couch to my pleasing.

The more pregnant I get, the more I learn about humility (and as I imagine the months to come, I believe there is probably still a lot to learn in this regard). For a person who has always had some level of coordination and balance, it's humbling to fall over when you're just trying to do a plie in warm-up (let alone when you're attempting to get out of bed or put on clothing...). Sometimes the only thing you can do is laugh at yourself, and rightfully so.

Case and point. The other night I was agonizing over what to wear for undergarments for my costumes this weekend, and I decided to give my old standard nude colored leotard a try, testing it out to see if it would stretch over my belly. It did indeed, and my sweet, supportive, ever-amused husband was watching me in the attempt. As I pulled the straps over my shoulders victoriously he started laughing and said, "oh, you look just like a cabbage patch doll." With my bulging middle and soft, amorphous, nude-colored torso there was absolutely nothing to deny about his observation.

And so once again I conceded to the fact that the only thing to do in that moment was laugh and embrace my own cabbage patch-ness. What a funny ride.
