I have a little announcement. Paul and I called our internet carrier today and cut off service. That's right, cut it off. They'll be coming sometime next week, probably while we're back in Nebraska enjoying the good life for Thanksgiving, to officially do the deed.
The problem here is, we have both acquired mild, er, not so mild internet obsessions. Between email, facebook, the news, hulu (oh, hulu), other blogs and the list goes on, we can often be found sitting at our computers for hours on end. The recent election only heightened this problem, and it's time to do something about it.
We always talk about our fear of becoming people who are just hamsters on the treadmill, not stopping in their routine in order to think for a moment, "what the heck am I doing?" And so we stopped, and we thought. We decided we needed to be reading more, cooking more, recording music more, dancing dances more. And ultimately, we need to be on the computer less. Obviously, this will be a hard break for me, I love both my frequent emailing and facebooking oh so much.
Our additional inspiration has been our church's involvement this Christmas in Advent Conspiracy, check out the blog here. The tenants of Advent Conspiracy are: spend less, give more, worship fully and love all. Since we are childless and most of our families do some sort of exchange for the holidays, it has taken some shifts but hasn't been impossible for us to figure out how to spend less and give more this season. Thus we're throwing a little focus in the direction of worshiping more fully, and we are hopeful that a shift in lifestyle - away from computer related time and more intentionally focused on fruitful and thoughtful activity - will help us to do just that.
All that to say, I may not be blogging as much in the coming months (not that I was ever super consistent anyway...). Perhaps you'll catch me online, but hopefully I'll be too caught up in a good book or a new dance to care.
That said, please pray for me. This could be scary.

I have to say that I am very disappointed that I will not be able to read your words of wisdom for awhile. I enjoyed your take on the recent election. I read your comment about the girls' names on facebook and I have to tell you that during my c-section the anesthesiologist asked me if Regan was named after the president. I told him that we specifically spelled it different than Ronald because she was NOT named after him, and to that he said, "well, not that he was a bad president". I replied, "sure, except for the whole AIDS epidemic thing". I quickly realized that it probably wasn't the best time to get in to a political debate while my guts were all over the table. Thought you'd appreciate the story...
