Food and milk and such...
I have food on the brain today. I just sealed up the envelope for our CSA order (you know spring is near when you're signing up for your CSA, hooray!), I've been talking with my friend J about summer garden plans (she's thankfully going to let me apprentice her in all of her garden wisdom this summer!), and in the midst of all this my friend posted this article on Facebook - seven foods so unsafe that even farmer's won't eat them (if you don't want to read the article - they are canned tomatoes, corn-fed beef, microwave popcorn, non-organic potatoes and apples, farmed salmon and non-organic milk with hormones). Yikes. I try to stay pretty on top of the dirty dozen and other such important food info, so luckily wasn't totally surprised and scared by this list, but I thought the article was worth a share. While it's always key to be aware, I'm especially interested because I've been thinking a lot about Adah's upcoming one-year transition to cow's milk. Neither Paul or I are cow's milk drinkers, and I'm not really all that keen about Adah consuming a ton of it (for many reasons, one primary being that the milk is, ironically, meant for cows), so I've been trying to decide how to handle all of this. I know that the whole fat milk is important for several nutrients and the fat content, and we will definitely break the bank to go organic (another good article on that right here). But what I'm toying with is sticking to one serving at most a day of the cow's milk, and then also feeding her almond milk (which is the milk Paul and I drink for cereal, use for cooking etc.). But I'd like some input from milk feeding mamas or other knowledgeable peeps out there reading this blog - what sort of milk did you feed your babe after the transition from breastmilk/formula? And have you heard any reasons against going with almond or other nut milks (i.e. I'm avoiding soy because of mixed reviews/studies there)? This is all stressing an already anxious lady out! Thanks for listening and for feedback...

We had a long conversation with our pediatrician about this last year at this time. Neither Robin nor I drink cow's milk, so we shared your concern about introducing it to Lydia. Our doctor felt very strongly about the fats in milk, especially since Lydia doesn't eat meat, She is generally very open to our ideas, and we really respect her opinion.
After the conversation, we decided to go with whole cow's milk for awhile, and as the year continued on, we ended up letting Lydia lead the way with what milk she wanted. After having a little taste of soy--the milk that makes me the most nervous--she developed a strong preference for it, but she has finally settled on 2% cow's milk. She doesn't like almond milk, the milk that I drink, so now we have three different kinds of milk in our fridge. :)
I can empathize with your questions... I remember this transition well!
